These programs help fulfill prerequisites and offer a chance to improve your undergraduate GPA. Usually, post-bacc programs provide certificates of completion or no formal award at all.
• Special Master’s Programs are tailored for students who have already finished the necessary medical school prerequisite courses but wish to further strengthen their academic profile. SMPs establish a separate GPA, independent of your undergraduate GPA, and award master’s degrees upon completion.

When you’re researching Special Master’s Programs, make sure to check if the program is affiliated with a medical school. You can usually find this information on the program’s website. Another helpful resource is the AAMC Post-Bacc Database, which lists post-baccalaureate and master’s programs along with their affiliations. It may take some clicking and scrolling, but it’s worth it to ensure you’re on the right track.

The Opportunity to Gain Valuable Research Experience 

While it’s not a requirement to have research experience when applying to medical school, it’s become increasingly common because it looks impressive on your medical school application.

SMPs that have partnerships with medical schools would allow you to work on research projects led by faculty members who are also affiliated with the medical school. You’ll get the opportunity to build connections with these faculty members, which can make you a familiar face in the eyes of the admissions committee.

Pro tip: Many professors at graduate schools are also faculty members at medical schools. So, by impressing your professors during your Master’s program, you could potentially secure a mentor or snag a valuable letter of recommendation for medical school. Considering that SMPs are intense and time-consuming, having dedicated MCAT prep built into the program is a huge advantage. However, make sure you’re not overloading your schedule. Juggling both the SMP coursework and MCAT preparation can be challenging. Keep in mind though that there are also post-bacc programs which are including this into their package.

More Exposure to Clinical and Volunteer Opportunities 

Many SMPs integrate real-life clinical experience and community service into their curriculum, which can help you gain valuable hands-on experience and build up your AMCAS work and activities section.

These programs typically look for students who have already accumulated significant clinical and volunteer hours before enrolling, so if you already have some experience but want to add to it, an SMP can be a great opportunity.

Cons of Enrolling in an SMP

While all the pros listed above may have you asking, “Where do I sign up?” take a minute before you go all in to look at the less-than-great aspects of pursuing a special master’s program.

SMPs Can Be Seriously Pricey

Be warned – you’re likely looking at shelling out at least $30,000 or more just for tuition alone with a special master’s program. So, if your GPA or MCAT score is on the lower side, perhaps explore more budget-friendly options, such as doing a DIY post-bacc program and retaking the MCAT. 

But if investing in your future is a priority and you have the financial means to back it up, then by all means, go for it! Just be sure to do your homework. Check out the program’s tuition and financial aid options, and don’t forget to look into scholarships that could help offset the cost.

Perform Well, Or Else!

If you give it your all and excel in the SMP, congratulations; you stand a great chance of boosting your chances of getting into medical school. But here’s the catch – if things don’t go as planned and you don’t earn the minimum GPA, then you’ll significantly hurt your chances of getting into medical school. 

The road to recovery from a poor SMP performance can be long, difficult, and not something you want to take on especially if you can help it. So, be prepared to put in the work. The SMP curriculum demands dedication, perseverance, and a whole lot of grit. It’s as challenging as the coursework you’ll encounter in medical school (although it may help your eventual first year of medical school feel like more of the same). 

Opting for an SMP Puts a Slight Hold on Your Timeline

Obviously, you’ll be extending the time it takes to apply to medical school by first completing a master’s degree. However, if you were considering a gap year or reapplying anyway, it’s in no way a waste of time. By undertaking a special master’s program, you’re building up your application by showcasing your ability to handle the academic challenges that lie ahead in medical school.

However, if you have a GPA above 3.3, it might be more worthwhile to focus your time and energies on acing the MCAT instead. The commitment and effort required to study and possibly retake the MCAT is way less intensive than pursuing a full-fledged master’s program.

Your Graduate GPA is Viewed Separately from Your Undergraduate GPA

Keep in mind that even if you excel in your SMP and achieve a high GPA, it won’t directly impact your overall undergraduate GPA. So, if your grades were lower in college, an SMP only reflects an upward trend in your graduate studies. 

For instance, if you have a cumulative undergrad GPA of 2.9  and a 3.3 GPA from your post-bacc performance, you may still need to further prove your academic abilities before applying to medical school. So, opting for a special master’s degree may be worth it because you want to build on your post-graduate upward trend.
