Are there really walking pad benefits for multi-tasking getting in a few steps while studying? Or is it just another misguided trend?
Of course, it’s been shared repeatedly how sitting for long periods can increase your risk of developing typically preventable health issues, such as certain kinds of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. However, as a premed or medical student sometimes you have to get things done like studying for your classes, the MCAT, Step Exams, and the list goes on. These tasks really don’t mesh well with CrossFit or hiking a mountain trail or swimming a few laps or, well, you get it!
So, other than just getting a standing desk, which (although a step forward) isn’t the solution since recent studies now say standing is as problematic as sitting, what’s a future doctor to do? Are the walking pads (a.k.a. under-desk treadmills) you keep seeing people raving about on TikTok actually the perfect solution?
Since I was super curious myself, I did some digging and got your answer right here! I’ll cover the health and productivity benefits of studying while walking on a walking pad, plus what you need to consider before you try it out. Then, I’m sharing the five top-rated walking pads, from affordable to splurge, that’ll get you moving during those long study sessions.
This post is all about walking pad benefits.

Top Walking Pad Benefits
Is Studying on a Walking Pad a Good Idea?
Actually, yes! A study conducted by the Mayo clinic highlights how combining movement with our daily tasks, such as studying, reduces sitting time and results in positive outcomes, including boosting brain power!
When the participants in the study used “active workstations,” their brain function either improved or, at the very least, stayed steady. Also, while the added movement caused a slightly slower typing speed, accuracy actually stayed on point!
Even more impressive, when they compared the reasoning scores while walking to the usual sitting, the results showed significant improvement. Talk about a win-win! So, if you’re looking to study smarter investing in a walking pad might just be the way to go.
Walking Pad Benefits that Boost Your Health and Improve Your Productivity
Perhaps you haven’t even thought about how studying doesn’t have to be all about sitting still at a desk. I know I hadn’t heard about it until it suddenly invaded my social media algorithm! Fortunately, unlike many trends, getting on a walking pad while studying (or just because you can’t get outside or to the gym) offers amazing benefits.
- Increased Alertness and Focus: Gentle movement gets your blood flowing, which can seriously amp up your concentration and make those study sessions way more productive. It’s like giving your brain a little wake-up call!
- Goodbye, Fatigue: Ever felt that mid-study slump where your eyelids are getting heavier than your textbooks? Yeah, we’ve all been there. But when you’re walking while studying, you’re actively fighting off that tiredness. The gentle exercise helps you shake off the sluggishness so you can power through those long study sessions.
- A Total Mood Booster: Moving your body releases feel-good endorphins that can help chase away stress and anxiety. So, while tackling complex topics (Hi, Biochem!), you’ll feel lighter and happier. Who doesn’t want to study in a better mood?
- Kinesthetic Learning Power: Some of us just aren’t wired to learn while sitting still. If you’re more of a “move to learn” kind of person, then walking while studying could be perfect for you! The rhythm of your steps can help lock in new ideas and concepts, making it tons easier to grasp what you’re trying to learn.
- Increased Physical Activity and Improved Physical Health: One of the best perks of studying on a walking pad is the obvious. It gets you moving! You can sneak in a few thousand steps. Plus, walking reduces the risk of health issues, including heart disease and obesity, helps you maintain a healthy weight, and boosts your cardiovascular fitness.
So, there you have it! Studying on a walking pad isn’t just the next big thing. It’s actually packed with benefits that can make learning feel more enjoyable, less draining, and a little healthier.
Tips to Consider Before You Hop On and Hit Start
Let’s take a quick moment to chat about a few things to make sure you’re safely using your walking pad and getting the most out of your study sessions while staying comfortable and focused.
- Set Up Your Walking Pad on a Stable Surface: You definitely don’t want your treadmill doing a little shimmy while you’re trying to study! You might need to tweak the feet or toss a mat underneath to keep it in place. Better to be safe than sorry!
- Ergonomics Matter: Think about your desk setup. Before walking, have everything in the right spot to avoid straining your posture while you’re striding. Adjust your screen to eye level, and check that your arms can comfortably rest to avoid any weird aches in your back later on.
- Find the Perfect Pace and Intensity: Keep it chill! A slow, steady walking pace is your best friend when you’re trying to concentrate. If you’re walking too fast, your mind may wander to wishing you could take a breather. So, just cruise at a relaxed pace.
- Motion Sickness is Real: Some folks report feeling dizzy or experiencing nausea from the motion. If that sounds like you, no worries, just start slow! Give yourself some time to get used to walking and studying at the same time. You’ll likely adapt before you know it!
- Watch Out for Distractions: Lastly, keep an eye out for potential distractions from the walking itself, especially if you’re tackling complicated topics or detailed materials. If your mind starts to wander, it could lead to tripping or falling. A trip to the ER because you fell doesn’t count as clinical experience!
All joking aside, please, please, please be safe when you’re using your walking pad, especially if you’re pairing it with studying. Your safety has to be the most important priority!
How to Choose the Right Walking Pad for You
First, to avoid any confusion when you go to shop, a walking pad is not the same thing as a treadmill! Treadmills are bulky with their huge handrails and noisy motors. However, walking pads are portable, super quiet, and lightweight. You can easily tuck one away under your desk, bed, or couch when you’re not using it.
So, now that we’ve cleared that up, it’s time to pick the right one for your personal setup. Here are a few tips to help you navigate your way to the perfect walking pad.
- Space Issues: You need to think about where this beauty is going to live. If your workspace is on the cozy side, look for a sleek, compact design or a foldable model that can slide right under your desk or tuck away in a corner.
- Weight Capacity: Check the weight limit of the treadmill you’re eyeing. Most under-desk treadmills typically handle between 220-265 pounds, but it’s always smart to double-check.
- Speed Matters: How fast do you want to move? If you’re just looking to stroll while you power through studying, then you won’t need to upgrade to higher-performance models. But if you’re feeling ambitious and want to break into a jog now and then, look for one that can reach higher speeds.
- Extra Features: Some walking pads have cool features like built-in desks, phone mounts, and cool tech. Think about what would make your life easier and more enjoyable as you walk and work.
Budgeting: Walking pads can range from under a hundred to close to a thousand dollars or more. The best models seem to hover around a few hundred bucks. Set a budget that works for you, and then explore the options within that range.

Omg, have been eyeing this for MONTHSSS and still haven’t dropped the ball yet 🙁 I love this especially for days I can’t make it to the gym. As much as I love taking an 1-1.5 hours out of my day to decompress at the gym, it’s so hard to actually get myself there on the days where I’m too anxious to do anything other than drive myself to the library and back home. Being active and setting a goal to get about 10,000 steps on my active days of the week really keeps me going. Finals week this week is kicking my butt and definitely ruining my gym schedule 🙁
