Radiology techs hold associate degrees and are trained to operate imaging equipment. Meanwhile, radiologists are medical doctors with substantially more educational backgrounds who interpret images from X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs to diagnose conditions and recommend treatment plans.
So, while techs focus on the hands-on aspect of capturing images, radiologists analyze them to make informed medical decisions. Where you work and your experience level can make a big difference in your salary! Here are several key factors that come into play.
- Experience and Education: As with many professions, experience matters. Radiologists who have been practicing for longer or have subspecialty training generally see higher earnings. Basically, expertise can really pay off!
- Location: Where you practice can significantly impact your salary. For instance, radiologists in big cities like New York tend to earn an average annual salary of about $409,782. In contrast, those practicing in states like Arkansas might earn less at nearly $266,703.
- Cost of Living: Alongside location, the cost of living can influence salary figures. Higher salaries might be needed in cities where everyday expenses are steep, while rural areas may offer lower pay but also lower living costs.

In fact, you can major in virtually any field as long as you fulfill the necessary pre-med courses. That said, maintain a high GPA in the prerequisite courses since they form the foundation of your medical education.
Prepare Your Medical School Application
To stay competitive as an applicant, set a goal to achieve at least a B+ or higher in your science courses. Once you’ve successfully been accepted into an allopathic or osteopathic medical school, you’ll start on a four-year curriculum that lays the groundwork for your medical career, particularly in radiology. As you progress into the second half of your education, you’ll transition into clinical rotations, gaining hands-on experience in various specialties, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine, and more. Finally, in your fourth year, you’ll really get to tailor your studies towards radiology, choosing specific electives that align with your interests.
Obtain Licensure and Certifications
Throughout medical school, you’ll navigate multiple board exams, including the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) for MD students and the COMLEX for DO students. These exams lead you to acquire a medical license in the U.S. Typically, students take Step 1 of the USMLE by the end of their second year and Step 2 in their fourth year. Step 3, which you must complete post-graduation, often occurs during your early residency years.
Complete Internship and Residency Training
As you approach the end of your medical education, you’ll enter the exciting phase of applying to radiology residency programs. This process involves interviewing at various hospitals, clinics, or private practices where you might want to train. Once you complete the interviews, a computer algorithm will match you to a residency.
Radiology residencies typically last about 4 to 5 years. During this time, you’ll engage in rotations and hands-on training, which are crucial for your development as a radiologist. In your first year, often referred to as the internship year, you’ll get a taste of various medical specialties, which provides a well-rounded foundation. After that, the next few years focus intensively on radiology itself. You’ll learn to interpret medical images, ultrasound results, and other radiologic tests while working closely with experienced radiologists.
What Happens During Residency?
During your residency, you’ll spend considerable time with patients, developing treatment plans based on imaging studies and actively participating in clinical discussions and decision-making. Each rotation might focus on different aspects of radiology, from diagnostics to interventional procedures, giving you a comprehensive understanding of the field. Also, as you settle into your residency, you’ll begin to think about which sub-specialty of radiology you want to pursue.
Be aware that the demands of residency can be intense. Long hours, high patient volumes, and copious amounts of reading can understandably lead to burnout. You’ll need to prioritize self-care during this time, and better yet already start during your premed years!
Achieve Board Certification
While board certification isn’t a legal requirement for practicing radiology, it plays a vital role in your professional credibility. In fact, nearly all employers will expect you to be board-certified before hiring you! Board certification involves passing a series of exams that effectively assess your knowledge and practical skills in radiology. Initially, you must tackle both written and oral exams to earn your certification.
To become board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology, you must pass two key exams, starting with the Core Exam, which you can take after completing 36 months of residency training. Once you’ve successfully navigated the Core Exam, you’ll be eligible for the second exam, the Certification Exam. However, just a heads up, this exam can only be taken after you’ve completed your residency in Diagnostic Radiology, and it’s offered twelve months after that.
